The three original tracks – Autonomy, Boundaries, and Consent – use a Jersey Club beat sound and feature nine-year-old rapper Kaiylnn Baker. The songs are uplifting and empowering, with a common refrain in all three tracks to underscore key concepts around autonomy, boundaries, and consent. Illustrators Stephanie Brown-Young, Khang Do, and Caerina (CeCe) Abrenica, under the guidance of FCB Health Canada, brought these concepts to life through comic book style story lines that follow the characters of Aria, Ben, and Charlotte as they go on a transformative journey with friends and family, and tap into their superpowers to learn about communicating their own choices and respecting the choices of others.

We created six Educator Toolkits in partnership with Advocates for Youth, all available for free on our website. The Toolkits include standards-aligned lesson plans, slides, classroom activities, and family materials for grades K-2 and 3-5. The Toolkit lessons are flexibly designed to be taught in one class or in three mini-sessions, and provide guidance and best practices for educators. Student activities are multi-sensory, integrating artistic expression, role plays, and movements.

Choreographer and dancer Jamie Drye designed an original dance that is featured in the animated videos. The ABCs of Me Collection includes Breakin’ It Down instructional videos with Jamie so that kids and families can learn the moves and dance along.

Throughout project development, we conducted youth and parent/caregiver surveys, teacher input sessions, and educator review groups to provide direction and feedback on the topics, approach, and materials.

The ABCs of Me project includes free training for New York City teachers, in collaboration with NYC Public Schools Office of School Wellness Programs, and additional virtual training opportunities for educators nationally.

“The music, art, and movement woven into The ABCs of Me make these essential healthy relationship concepts approachable and empowering for young people and their families,” said Lindsey Harr, Chief Program and Operations Officer at Hip Hop Public Health. “We are incredibly grateful to the artists, educators, supporters, and partners who joined us on this journey to create memorable songs, videos, and educational materials that will help kids develop the skills to advocate for themselves and others in their friend and family relationships.”
